Small Business Resources Offer Big Help

If you’re in the process of starting a small business or simply trying to keep your current company afloat, the tasks can seem monumental.

How do you formulate a business plan? What kind of marketing and social media pages should you have in place? And what about basic financial management?

If you’re seeking that kind of advice or assistance, there are several organizations on Staten Island that provide it and many of the services are free of charge. Here’s a look at a few of the borough’s most helpful small business resources.

Staten Island Small Business Development Center

Established in 1993, this free outreach service, which is sponsored by partners in both public and private sectors, offers customized business solutions through advisement, education, research and advocacy for entrepreneurs, innovators and the small and medium enterprise community.

Specializing in helping small business owners maneuver around the obstacles to success, the group offers informative seminars and gives one-on-one counseling. They help clients understand the importance of a business plan, discover sources of funding, prepare for e-commerce, identify avenues for exporting goods and services, develop marketing plans, assess an invention’s viability and comply with licensing and regulations. They also help with disaster recovery, minority women business enterprise and veteran’s services and assistance programs.

Over the past 26 years, the SBDC has worked directly with 9,488 businesses, helping them to invest $200,404,044 in the area’s economy and create or save 6,006 jobs.
