Barnes & Noble’s New Staten Island Store is a National Prototype

When Barnes & Noble designed the space for its new store in the Staten Island Mall, the world’s largest retail bookseller decided to do something a little different.

“We are thrilled to continue to serve the Staten Island community by launching a new prototype store at the Staten Island Mall,” reported Frank Morabito, vice president of stores for the Barnes & Noble brand. “This new prototype is part of our ongoing testing of new store concepts across the country, and will offer a clean, contemporary new design that is easy to shop and friendly to our customers. It will feature a full assortment of books at its core, with an amazing selection of educational toys and games, family games and puzzles and curated gift items for avid readers.”

While the layout is not remarkably different than that of the borough’s original Barnes & Noble store, there are some innovative details in the aesthetics: The 20,114-square-foot store features modern oak bookshelves and wood grain tile floors throughout; lower profile bookshelves provide customers with a panoramic view of the store, contributing to an open and airy feel. Two large “book theaters” invite customers to discover books in a new 360-degree experience and illuminated bookcases are incorporated to “further enhance discovery.”

The Children’s Section – with its dedicated LEGO® activity table and bright pops of brick red and yellow – creates a special environment for Barnes & Noble’s youngest customers. A whimsical “jungle gym” display feature, which is unique to this prototype and is built specially for toys and popular children’s characters, adds a sense of fun to the Children’s Section.

The store, which is one of only 10 prototypes that the retailer is testing throughout the country, also features communal table seating for small “book club” gatherings and individual comfortable chairs.

The Café at Barnes & Noble Staten Island also features a brand new look and offers a wide selection of Starbucks® coffees and teas, in addition to fresh-baked goods, savory sandwiches, flat breads, quiches and a soup of the day. Healthy grab-and-go snacks are also available. There are a variety of seating options for diners to choose from, including informal spots to settle in with a cup of coffee and a good book. Customers can choose to sit at a community worktable featuring easily accessible USB/AC outlets.

Barnes & Noble booksellers look different, too.

Each bookseller is equipped with a tablet to help assist customers anywhere in the store. This technology will allow booksellers to help customers with product selection and easily locate books on the store floor. Self-serve kiosks will enable customers to research, discover and locate books throughout the store as well.

A 700-square-foot flexible event space is also available for story times, local school bookfairs and author signings. For information about booking the space, call 718-355-6033. Customers can find Barnes & Noble Staten Island on social media by searching the handle @BNStatenIsland.
